 Basic optionsXpress Review:

Investors love optionsXpress, the online discount brokerage created in 2000, and experts seem to also. Barrons’s Annual Online Broker Review has given this brokerage four or more stars for ten years running while Kiplinger’s recently gave them a five for their pricing scheme. With mobile trading apps which consistently come in at the top of the class, fast order fill and powerful trading options among the optionsXpress account features, beginners and experts alike find this to be the perfect choice. The prices for equities and options do tend to run slightly higher than with other discount brokerages, but this brokerage is a great choice for self-directed investors, anyone looking to improve on their trading skills and options and derivatives traders.

optionsXpress fees and commissions

No money is required to open an account and there are no hidden platform fees. Equities and broker assisted trades come in at $8.95 while options are $1.50 a contract. There is a $14.95 minimum for options. Penny options are slightly different as they are .50 cents per contract with a $4.95 minimum. Futures are priced on a tier basis, with the lowest tier costing $2.99. Mutual funds are $9.95 plus a load fee. Broker assisted trades are only $8.95 while bonds cost $5.00 per bond with a $9.95 minimum.

Types of investments

Investors may choose from a wide variety of investments when using optionsXpress. Options, equities, ETFs, futures and mutual funds are available. Nine futures exchanges are offered along with 18 pairs of Forex. One area where this brokerage is lacking is in its range of international investments. Many are hoping this will change as optionsXpress was recently acquired by Charles Schwab.

Education, tools and research

To make investing easy, this brokerage offers research reports, breaking news, market analysis, free live streaming quotes and market commentary. The Screen gives investors the opportunity to compare potential investments to determine which best fit into their overall portfolio. Strategy Scan provides advances tools and charts so investors can compare and analyze trades in a variety of ways. Xtend is offered along with Watch Lists to make buying and selling easy. Educational tools are offered for all major trading options and investors can choose between tutorials, workshops and webinars. All are free.

Many turn to this brokerage as it offers live chat, e-mail and phone support. Support is available around the clock. For convenience, four branch offices are also open.
