Basic TradeStation Review:

Barron’s has named TradeStation the number one brokerage for 2012. The platform available to traders is easy to use and allows investors to design, implement and automate trading strategies based on rules the investor sets. A wide variety of investment products are offered, trading is automated and commissions are low. Advanced analysis tools are offered, but traders who aren’t overly active must pay a monthly fee. Margin rates are high, this brokerage doesn’t offer Smart Phone Apps and won’t work with Mac OS X systems. Day traders who are tech hungry love this brokerage, but those who are new to trading may find this isn’t the right option for them.

TradeStation fees and commissions

In order to open an account with this brokerage, a minimum of $5,000 must be deposited. Pricing is more complicated with this brokerage. Platform fees are $99.95 a month unless you meet certain criteria. Equities may be priced per-share or flat-fee. Options run $1 per contract while mutual funds are $14.95. Broker assisted trades are $50 and margin rates range from 7.75% to 6.25%. Futures are .25 cents to $1.20 per side, per contract. This is also based on investor activity. Bonds run $14.95 plus $5 per bond.

Types of investments

Options, ETFs and futures are offered along with equities and 24 pairs of FOREX. Twelve international exchanges are available for those who wish to invest in this manner. Investors should ensure they will meet one of the trade minimums to avoid paying high fees.

Education, research and tools

TradeStation is known for it’s advanced tools. Investors turn to this platform as it may be customized and designed to meet the investor’s individual needs. These tools allow the investor to back test a strategy, optimize it and then monitor it. Strategy Network is offered, for an additional fee, to those who wish to get analysis and trading tools to be used with this brokerage. Pattern day trading limits are automatically enforced for day traders so PDT regulations are never exceeded. Paid and free workshops are offered along with free webinars and tutorials.

When it comes to TradeStation’s account features and customer support, many find this is not the best option for those new to trading. Experienced traders will love the offerings available at this brokerage though. Customer support is available through e-mail, phone and live chat, but only during certain hours.
