Capital One ShareBuilder is a US based online brokerage firm founded in 1996. The brokerage is an extension of ING Direct. Although they specialize in stock trading, they also offer mutual funds, options and exchange traded funds.

In this Sharebuilder review, I’ll cover what Sharebuilder has to offer, who they’re right for, and give you guys some links to the latest Sharebuilder promotions. If you’ve used Sharebuilder before, please add your own rating and review below.

Sharebuilder – The Basics:

Investments: Stocks, options, mutual funds (access to more than 250 no load mutual funds, 70 of them being ING mutual funds and free of cost), exchange traded funds.
Commissions: Fee structure for stock trades and ETF’s is pretty basic –$4 is charged for all automatic investments. For non-automatic investments, $9.95 is charged for the basic plan and $7.95 for the advantage plan. The provision of phone orders has been provided with a rate of $19.95 per trade. For options, the basic plan charges $9.95 + $1.25 per contract, while the advantage plan costs $7.95 + $0.75 per contract. $20 is charged for any assignment. The advantage plan costs an additional $12 per month. For the rest, a transaction fee of $19.95 is charged. Broker assisted trades also cost $19.95 per trade.
Investor Education: Offerings in investor education include articles, graphs and charts. Sadly, they do not offer any webinars, and much of what they offer can be obtained for free online.
Mobile apps: Middle of the pack apps for Blackberry, Android devices and the iPhone.


Various types of accounts are offered which include free IRA accounts, individual/joint accounts, education savings account, and custodial account. They do not charge any maintenance fees. Unfortunately, their accounts do not offer virtual trading.

ShareBuilder has a reputation of being a no-frills broker meant for people who want to invest automatically into the same fund or stock. And with a commission of $4 per transaction, ShareBuilder is an economical platform to use for your investments. The free no load IMG mutual funds are another reason to use ShareBuilder for your investments.

Overall takeaway: Use them if you’re keen on cheap, hands-off automatic investments. Otherwise you can find better.
